Stuff I bought in May

I’m going shopping tomorrow for a dress to actually wear to my cousin’s wedding (my mum didn’t quite approve of the previous one because she thought it was too morbid), but I haven’t really updated in a while, so I thought I might just go ahead and show you all the stuff I’ve bought this month. I suppose I’ll talk about it category by category, because I’m a neat freak like that when it comes to formatting. Not my room. My room’s an absolute tip and always has been!

This is going to be a pretty long blog, so bear with me!

Makeup

Surprise, surprise…I didn’t actually buy that much makeup this month. Three items in total, but all of them are lip products (of course) because I apparently have this obsession with lip products, the main reason being that the rest of my makeup stays pretty much the same all the time, so I like to play it up with lip colors. Anyway, on with what I bought.

In case you weren’t already aware, I’m in love with M.A.C’s lipsticks, and I basically want every color that they have that’s not a sheer/creamy formula. I don’t know if anyone else thinks this, but I just think that if you’re going to wear lipstick, it should be pigmented. Why wear it if you only want the tiniest tinge of color that’s barely noticeable? I don’t usually wear anything creamier than Satin, though there are some colors that are worth looking at.

Generally speaking, M.A.C. products are very pigmented, so I’m not complaining. On the left in the photo is Rebel (Satin), which I have been tempted to buy since I saw NiaSays talk about it in several of her videos. It’s a sort of plum color, or the color of blueberry jam, which is lovely. It’s a bit of an ‘out there’ color, but I like it. On the right is Taupe (Matte), which is sort of a rosy terracotta color, which I love. I’ve been wearing it all the time since I’ve bought it, and gotten quite a few compliments on it (even from my student’s mum…). Oh…I’m actually wearing it right now! Haha :P

The other lip product I picked up was the Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss in Fire (018).

Let me tell you something. I don’t ever buy lipgloss, and I most certainly wasn’t looking to buy one when I went to the drugstore. But being me, I love the color red, and this was too beautiful to resist. It’s extremely pigmented, and doesn’t actually feel sticky or too shiny. I usually just apply a really thin coat of it (like I said, it’s really pigmented), and it shows up as a berry-stain type of shade, which I quite like.

Hair

You could say I’m sort of particular or not about my hair. I don’t really do much to it on a daily basis in terms of styling, but if we’re talking about maintaining and nourishing it, I do quite a bit. I’m slowly trying to dye my hair back to the bright red it used to be, but it’s taking a bit f time for the previous black dye to wash out. Everything to do with my hair, I do by myself. That includes: washing, conditioning, repairing, dying, styling, and cutting.

Recently I’ve been trying to improve my own hairdressing skills, and digging under my parents’ bed to borrow my mom’s shears isn’t so comfortable (it’s dusty and hard to reach!) so I went and bought my own. The pair on the top is a regular pair of hairdressing shears, and the bottom ones are crocodile shears, used for thinning out the ends and giving a more natural finish.

I did give myself a haircut with these recently. My security guard didn’t recognize me…ironically, he still recognized me when I dyed my hair electric red. Oh well. I did also buy some combs and sectioning clips just for handy use.

One more thing I bought is dry shampoo. It took me ages to find, but it turns out that Watson’s has it, but right at the bottom corner of the shampoo section (I had to ask one of the salespeople). This is the only one they have, and it’s the Batiste Dry Shampoo (Original). Seeing as I’m dying my hair back to red, I can’t possibly wash my hair every day (I only wash it twice a week), and so dry shampoo comes in handy. It’s kind of hard to know when to brush it out, and some of stays there until the next day, but generally speaking, it serves its purpose of eliminating the grease and potential smell built up over several days.

Skincare

I believe I only bought one skincare item this month, and that is the Vaseline Aloe Fresh Moisturizing Daily Body Gel. I already own the Vaseline Aloe hydrating lotion, but I was looking for a completely oil-free formula, and I saw this for roughly 30 HKD. I don’t know how I feel about this, because it certainly does hydrate the skin, but it leaves a slightly sticky layer on top of the skin for a while, but it does go away eventually.

WAIT. NO. I LIE. I BOUGHT SOMETHING ELSE TOO. Like I said, I was looking for an oil-free moisturizer. I got this in Watsons, and it was on sale for 52 HKD with a free pack of cotton wipes, so I was like “Hey, why not, right?”. This is the Watsons Collagen Hydrating Facial Gel. I liked this at first, until my face started to itch like mad. I don’t know if it actually has anything to do with the gel, but all I know is that during the period of time, my face itched like a mother. I might try it out again just to see if it’s really the gel that’s making my face itch, or if it’s just that my face was having a funky week.

Clothes

Two of the things I bought were both from Maple, and both minidresses. I love their stuff, because of the colorful stuff that’s pretty cheap. But I’m kind of a big girl, and not everything fits me that well. I should really start exercising…I haven’t exercised properly since high school…BUT ANYWAY. The first minidress I got has got half-shoulder pads, so they stick out at an angle. And yes. It’s GOLD. But when you put it on, the shape of everything you’re wearing underneath shows through the fabric like nobody’s business. Bra lining, the waistband of your panties, the whole lot. I don’t really know why I bought it….probably just because it’s gold. Yeah.

The other dress I got is a scoop-neck tank minidress that’s neon pink cotton with black lace over it. Again…slightly too small for me, but a little weight loss can’t hurt, because I do love this, and it’s just a really fun piece that is very wearable. I’ve really got to hit the gym some time (I don’t have a gym membership. I should really get one)

I didn’t get any shoes this month, probably because I already bought two pairs the month before that. I’m also kind of just loving wearing my Converses with my skinny jeans rolled up past my ankles these days. It’s just comfortable, and the last thing I want to be in this disgusting weather is uncomfortable. I hate summer with passion. I don’t even know how to make people fully understand my hatred for hot weather.

Others

And the last thing I got is not really a beauty item, but rather a home decor/organization thing. My makeup collection is gradually expanding by the week, and was starting to really clutter my desk and the tiny chest of drawers that I used to use to organize my makeup. So I went and bought some trays and organizers for my makeup and jewellery from my local home depot. They were only 12 HKD each, so I went ahead and bought 6 different ones.

In this one I keep my bronzers, blushes, powders, foundations, and some powder puffs. There’s also a vertical toothbrush there that I use to groom my eyebrows because I’m too lazy to go and buy an actual spooly.

This one has my lipsticks (MAC on the left, everything else on the right), my only concealer, lipglosses, some of my mascaras, pencil eyeliners, my only eyeshadow palette, a tub of homemade eyeshadow primer, a face primer, my Shu Uemura eyelash curler, and a eyeliner sharpener.

Just for the record, the tray itself it not actually like that. They’re three separate containers. I just stacked them on top of each other because I can.

This one holds all my makeup brushes, felt tip liners, hairbrushes, and one mascara that didn’t fit in the other container.

And lastly, my jewellery tray. From top left to bottom right: Stud earring,s hoop earrings, my Christmas earrings, dangly earrings, my crystallized rock bracelet I got from Guilin, all my rings, bangles and Cetaphil moisturizers, and bobby pins/hairclips.

I do believe that’s all of it! Until tomorrow that is…. ;)

A….brush.

I meant to talk about this particular brush earlier along with the Belle Madame sponge, but I guess I got a bit carried away with ranting about it, and so I forgot. Anyway, I got this brush at the same time yesterday with the Belle Madame sponge.
The first thing that hit me when I saw it was, yes, it looks exactly the same in concept as the Real Techniques stippling brush. Except this one isn’t exactly a stippling brush. I’m not really sure what kind of brush it is, really. Again, the packaging was in Japanese, and it’s not like I’m fluent in the language. The packaging does come with instructions, diagrams and such, and claims to be somewhat of a flat-headed foundation brush…? Not sure, because as far as I know, foundation brushes are rounded flat brushes. But it doesn’t have the varying lengths that a stippling brush does.
Anyway, I’ve used it once or twice to test it out, but not with foundation. I feel that it’s far too small for foundation; the entire thing is about the length of my hand, and the brush tip itself is slightly smaller than my big toe. So no, I’m not going to use it for foundation. I did, however, test it out for contouring/bronzer as well as blush.
The bristles are very densely packed, and they’re quite soft. It reminds me somewhat of my fluffy powder brush, but much, much more stiff and dense. The bristles are also very short, which makes application very precise.
I love it to pieces (as a contour brush). I’ve been using with my The Body Shop Shimmer Waves in Bronze, and it is gorgeous. I honestly don’t know how I’ve been doing my contouring/bronzer with such a giant brush before, but this just makes the definition so much sharper and cleaner. It cost me 58HKD, I believe *checks packaging* Yep. So, while it’s not entirely the best quality, it does the job very well, and I’m happy with it, so….ha!
I don’t really know what I ‘ha!’d for but it felt good, so there. Ha.
I’m going to go and peel a potato now.

Belle Madame All-In-One Blender Sponge

As usual after I go an tutor my student, I stop by the shopping mall near there to look around and see if anything appeals to me. I only intended to spend a maximum of 100 HKD, so I was limited to one or two items. Sasa it is.
I’ve been meaning to get a Beauty Blender type of sponge since I saw NiaSays on Youtube use one in her videos (If you don’t know her, please go check her out because she’s lovely) but I figured that getting one from MAC or any other high end brands was going to cost me quite a bit more than 100HKD, so when I saw this in Sasa today for 36HKD I pretty much just grabbed it off the shelf without really another thought.
Belle Madam All-in-one Blender Sponge
Sickeningly cute packaging; you know, pink, frilly, with the bubbly and cursive lettering on it. I don’t really know what it says to be honest, seeing as I can’t really read Chinese (I know, I’m quite a disgrace to my country). I don’t usually buy anything that is in a language I don’t understand or has packaging that just screams “I tried insanely hard to make this look girly” because I’ve never really had good luck with that. But, ya know…it was the only one, and it was only 36 bucks, I’m not going to be so picky.
But basically it claims to be able to apply foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, etc. in both liquid/powder form. I don’t know how true that is, but if the packaging claims so, then I guess it should be able to. I bought this because I wanted to see if such sponges actually would give the airbrushed look.
The sponge itself is peachy-white (you can tell I’ve already used it in the picture), and quite dense. I don’t know…like, it’s bouncy, but then it isn’t really soft and springy like I expected. Given that, I don’t have the actual Beauty Blender, so I don’t really have a basis of comparison, but I’m pretty sure it’s not meant to be this stiff. The top is tapered for hard-to-reach areas (sides of nose, around the eyes, etc.) and the bottom is rounded for the rest of the face. If you ask me, it looks pretty much like the Sonja Kashuk sponge.
As far as application goes, I don’t really see anything special about it. I dampened it first in hopes that it wouldn’t soak up so much product, but I think it just soaked up even more, because it’s so dense in material. In fact, I feel like it was applying a whole lot less product than I actually started out with, and it wasn’t easy to wash the damn thing, either. I feel like the disposable sponge wedges I usually get are actually better than this. I don’t know if I’m just using it wrong, but it certainly didn’t meet my expectations. I will, however, say that it applies loose powder very flawlessly and finely.
I don’t think I would ever use it for eyeshadow or liquid foundation again, but I might use it for powder on days when I feel like I need it. It’s not like I can return it anymore now that I’ve used it. Ah well. At least it didn’t cost me a fortune.
